I wrote a rambling essay about comments and their role in community sites (and blogs). I'll skip to the meat of it and give you my conclusion:
"Comments should be disabled 90% of the time."
Now, this opinion piece begins by looking at Newsvine as an example of a site where -- to me -- the comments don't seem to add much value to the stories (Digg and Slashdot being other examples). I thought it would be fun -- and oh, so deliciously meta -- to post this on Newsvine with the specific intention of inviting comments... meaningful ones.
So prove me wrong. Are comments 90% bad?
